Charles, I love catboats. So I'm restoring a Beetlecat for next season. When you look at a Beetle you can't believe it's only 12 feet long. A very roomy boat. Simple as it gets, one sail, when you want to tack you just push the tiller over , done, and nobody spills their drink :) I am also building a 15 foot V bottom catboat . That one will weight in at 1,400lbs. But that one will take me a few years.
Nice!
I have a Walker Bay dinghy that is a catboat rig (of sorts), but I've never sailed a larger one. Being the good geek that I am I did some digging into them this afternoon.
The Beetles are impressive - over 110 years and still being made from the same jig.
I watched some videos on them being restored and sailed. I can see the attraction.
I also ran across this video on an Arey's Pond catboat.

The guy does a good job explaining why the boats are built the way they are and has a lot of good tips about sailing the rig. He demos it well and shows how it performs and handles solo.
That whole "keep it flat for speed, push the tiller across and she just tacks and is ready to go" would be appealing!
The way the centerboard retracts (yet when down is pretty much under the mast) is cool and I really like that when the rudder is up it is not sticking down any lower than the keel. The guy was saying that you can sail one in 10" of water.
The 15 footer looks like a good size. Not a bad length and with a beam of 7.5 feet she'd be wide and stable with plenty of leg room.
There is a guy in the slip next to me that has a Com-Pac Cat Boat. I'll have to catch him up there this season and go sailing with him to see what I think of that rig in a larger boat.
I'm definitely going to have to look at this type of rig.
The simplicity of setup and sailing solo is attractive and these days I am all about time on the water sailing and not about racing.
"I would like to see Wildflower got to a small family or someone who will do some cruising."
She's a beauty for sure and I know that she's going to make someone very happy!
Thanks for the lead on the catboat design!
Charles
